About

Hi, I’m Alex. I’m 24 years old living in the San Francisco Bay Area, I’m chronically snarky and self-deprecating, and I am a writer. AA introduction aside, here are some handy dandy little facts about me.

I am a recent graduate from USC’s Master of Professional Writing program, where I emphasized in fiction. During my time there I completed the first third of a novel about passing psychopaths in upper middle class Californian suburbs, a project that I an continuing to work on. During my time in Hollyweird, I interned at a literary management agency and a development agency,  reading manuscripts, screenplays, and plays, vetting them film adaptation, and writing up coverage on them. I also worked as a writing tutor and grammar instructor. In other words, I *really* like writing.

This blog is I write about my experience of finding employment as a writer with a Master’s degree, and all the trials and tribulations that come with being out in the real world after six straight years of actively avoiding the real world via higher education. I will also be writing about my attempts to overcome some of the worst writers block I’ve had in my career as I try to finish my first novel. And maybe if you’re lucky I’ll post some pictures of my dog. Because there are too many damn cats on the Internet.

    • You can if you’re female. Being a crazy cat lady is far worse than being a crazy dog lady. Crazy dog ladies are “eccentrics”, whereas crazy cat ladies are just plain crazy.

      • True, though it’s never too early to start preparing. Better safe than sorry, I say; being the butt of a Simpson’s joke on a daily basis is something I’d very much like to avoid haha. I’ll settle for getting my cat fix on Reddit in the meantime 🙂

      • If we’re being picky he’s apparently from Orkney way up in the North and I’m from Gretna in the South so we’d have the whole country separating us.

As an aside, this is a really bizarre conversation to have as an introduction!

      • Oh well then that’s going to be like comparing somewhere like Oregon or Maine to Texas over here. Or, better yet, California to Texas. That would just be a silly thing to do (go California!).

I pride myself in quirky/bizarre intros. After all, how else would I have learned that Orkney is in the north of Scotland and Gretna is in the South?

      • I may be in California, but I’m still American. Anything with the word “map” in it or related to international geography in any way might as well be Aramaic to me. It’s a cultural thing.

        ( 😛 )

    • Of course! Haha good I’m glad; I try to keep the snark at a minimum, but as you can see, it has a habit of popping up every once in a while 😀

    • Thank you so much for the nomination! I am so flattered that you thought of me and my little blog 🙂 Here is my acceptance post, and the answers to your questions. I hope I did them justice! Hey! So, because I think your blog is awesome, I’ve nominated you for a Leibster Award! I did a post about the whole thing earlier today, which I’ve included at the bottom for more info and details and all that jazz about it, but just know that there are absolutely no strings attached and you can accept or not accept if you want. It’s just a nice little way of expressing my appreciation as a reader for your blog 🙂

      • That’s spooky since i’m just reading them now!! I’m really enjoying reading your blog so definitely keep it up – you’ve got a repeat reader 😀

      • Hahaha excellent! Great minds think alike…and have similar timing? 😀

Aww you’re too sweet! Well, I hope I can keep putting out content that you enjoy, and if you have any recommendations or suggestions please please please let me know. I’m a big fan of your blog, so your input would definitely be appreciated on my end 🙂

  3. Any respect I had for you after seeing you post Calvin and Hobbes several times, was lost when I found out you were a dog person. So now I hate you.

And seriously, I’ve enjoyed reading some of your older posts and I think your anecdotes on writing are fun and sometimes inspirational as well. I look forward to keeping up with your writing!

  4. Hi there Alex,
I just wanted to say I absolutely adore your blog, and wish you luck with your novel 🙂
Can I make one request, though? (If you said ‘no’, I didn’t hear you!) Can you pleeeeease post a wee bit more about techniques you use as a writer to overcome writer’s block etc.?
P.S. I hate to be ‘that’ person but you have a typo in the second paragraph, line 4 (“…I an continuing to work on”)

  5. I have to say, you had me at snarky and there was no turning back at Hollyweird. Looking forward to seeing your writing and your journey–I’ll be looking for jobs after grad school in just a few years here.

  6. I’m not sure why it is writers that are usually the most self-deprecating of the bunch, but I was brought here from your friend E.I. Anyway, stay snarky and keep on writing. I’ll be back to stalk.
